A 1949 advertisement for the Turf Tap Room. Galveston Isle magazine, Rosenberg Library.

Aided by the height of technology at the time, a wire ticker-tape system that connected two hundred cities in thirty-five states, the back room of the Turf building became the biggest horse-betting parlor in the state of Texas during the Great Depression. The racing wire was the invention of Moses L. Annenberg, whose Nationwide News Service was supplemented by hardware from the American Telegraph and Telephone Company. It provided instant results and outcomes of sporting events and races from all over the nation. The TAC fielded bets for football, basketball and baseball games, as well as for both horse- and dog-racing tracks, but these activities were not confined to Market Street. Maceo establishments throughout Galveston County served as satellite betting stations, and several third-party businesses kept Maceo books for a 25 percent cut of the profit.204
